“Around the Ben” was formed in honor of Ben Jackson, who was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s Disease at the age of 28.
For most early onset patients, Parkinson’s Disease progresses very slowly, but Ben’s disease has advanced rapidly over the past decade. His medical team has made rigorous attempts to address his symptoms through an intervention called Deep Brain Stimulation, but after three brain surgeries, this approach has not provided Ben with a significant improvement, nor has it slowed the progression of his disease. In 2015, Ben entered the most advanced stage of Parkinson’s (Stage 5).
Parkinson’s Disease has become a defining condition for Ben and the two most important people “Around the Ben” – his wife and caregiver Effie, and their beautiful daughter Melina.
Ben is a native of the Greater Rochester area. He lived most of his childhood and early adulthood in nearby Dansville, a quiet valley town in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. In his early twenties, Ben moved south, landing in Greenville SC, where he lived for nearly a decade before settling in his current hometown, Atlanta GA.
Ben is not alone in his fight – in the United States, 50,000-60,000 new cases of Parkinson’s disease (PD) are diagnosed each year, adding to the one million people who currently have PD.
