Did you know that the Lockkeeper’s House, built in 1837, is the oldest structure on the National Mall? Once a key part of managing traffic on the Washington City Canal, this historic building fell into disrepair over time. In 2017, Hensel Phelps took on the challenge of preserving this important piece of D.C.’s history.
Untouched for 40 years, Hensel Phelps began restoration of the structure in Spring 2017. Their team carefully relocated the building to enhance its visibility and accessibility, preserving its original stonework and 19th-century features. By 2018, the Lockkeeper’s House reopened as an educational center, offering a glimpse into D.C.’s canal history.
