Moving Day Phoenix Honors Debbie Smith

“This year the Southwest Chapter of the Parkinson’s Foundation will be honoring Debbie Smith at Moving Day Phoenix. As a well-known leader in the Parkinson’s community, Smith was instrumental in bringing this walk to Phoenix. She has been an active supporter of Moving Day since the beginning and has raised almost $30,000 with her team Southern Charmers.

Smith is a mentor, coach, and friend to many living with Parkinson’s in Arizona. She supports those who are newly diagnosed and serves as a trusted resource to people having a difficult journey with the disease.

“I support the Parkinson Foundation – Moving Day Phoenix because it provides resources that give us HOPE! Help with navigating the disease with resources and support. Opportunities to participate in classes, resources and training to both people with Parkinson’s and their Care Partners. Passion for finding a cure for the disease by funding research. Exercise programs funded through money raised in the Moving Day events,” said Smith.

Fundraising at the walk is important but so is the social aspect. “Moving Day is vital not only because it is our largest fundraising event of the year, but because it brings the Parkinson’s community together” said Robin Rhea, Development Director for PF’s Southwest Chapter. “This community really supports each other, and you can see how these interactions truly benefit everyone who attends,” she continued.

One of the critical efforts supported by Moving Day donations is PD GENEration, a clinical study by the Parkinson’s Foundation. PD GENEration examines the genetic foundations of the disease, opening doors to new treatment approaches and, hopefully, a cure. The Foundation is seeking additional participants for the study, and more information will be available at the event.

Moving Day Phoenix will include informational exhibits and a PD Experience where people who don’t have Parkinson’s can learn what it’s like to contend with some of the affliction’s symptoms. The event draws people of all ages and walks of life.

Moving Day has raised nearly $45 million and brought more than 186,000 participants together.
